SEO
SEO or paid ads: what should your business prioritise?
Choose a starting point based on demand, timing, your website and the questions you need answered.

Begin with the customer’s buying journey
Picture a customer who knows exactly what they need and another who has not yet recognised the problem. The first may search for a service. The second may need an explanation, demonstration or example before considering it. Your channel choice should reflect that difference.
Write down the questions asked before purchase. Identify which ones your website already answers and which ones require a clearer offer. Neither paid promotion nor organic visibility fixes an offer people cannot understand.
Use search content to build a useful foundation
Useful service pages and explanatory articles give people somewhere to evaluate you. They can support organic discovery and also help customers arriving from referrals, social posts or advertisements. Google’s Search Essentials emphasises useful content and discoverable links, without promising that every eligible page will be indexed.
Start with pages that answer important buying questions. Avoid building dozens of near-identical city pages simply because you serve customers across India. Explain genuine delivery differences when they exist.
Use advertising for a defined learning task
Paid advertising can put a specific offer in front of a selected audience while a campaign is running. The practical value depends on the message, the landing experience and the follow-up as well as the media settings.
A useful test could compare two ways of explaining an existing service. Keep a record of qualified enquiries rather than judging the experiment on traffic alone. Paying for advertising does not purchase better organic rankings.
Check readiness before choosing either route
If the website is broken, the offer is vague or nobody owns lead follow-up, address those problems first. If customers understand the service but struggle to find it, discovery may be the next priority. If traffic is present but enquiries are weak, examine the page and its audience.
These are diagnostic starting points, not fixed prescriptions. A small business may need a focused combination rather than a full programme on every channel.
Create a shared review instead of a channel contest
Compare what each activity contributes to the same customer journey. An article may answer a concern before someone returns through a branded search. An advertisement may reveal a question worth turning into a better service page.
Review work completed, relevant visits, qualified enquiries and sales feedback together. Give each channel a clear role and avoid assuming that the last recorded click tells the entire story.
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
Your action checklist
- List the questions customers ask before buying.
- Check whether the website can convert relevant visits.
- Give each channel one explicit job.
- Avoid organic ranking guarantees.
